What Causes An Allergic Reaction?

An allergic reaction is our bodies' natural reaction to substances that we are highly sensitive to. The kind of allergic reaction that we have may differ from person to person and may also differ depending on what kind of substance has triggered the allergic reaction.

An allergic reaction is caused by our exposure to an allergen. Allergens are substances that can promote the production of histamine in our bodies, thus creating the symptoms that manifest themselves when we encounter allergens. There are varying degrees of reactions that people experience due to allergies, some are mild while others are life threatening.

Symptoms Of An Allergic Reaction

Allergies that are triggered often manifest themselves through symptoms and signs that are really very hard to miss. These symptoms of an allergic reaction may be the common hay fever symptoms, which are sneezing, red and itchy eyes, clear nasal discharge, and a runny nose. Other symptoms are hives or rashes as well as severe nasal congestion.

Other more severe manifestations of an allergic reaction are swelling of some parts of the face, difficulty breathing, vomiting and abdominal pain, lightheadedness and difficulty in swallowing. Individuals who suffer from these symptoms need to be brought to the hospital for immediate treatment because these are signs that the airways are starting to block and also signs of diarrhea. If the person with an allergic reaction loses consciousness, bring him to the hospital immediately.

Allergens That Cause An Allergic Reaction

There are many different kinds of allergens that trigger nasty allergic reactions in many people. These allergens include dust, pollen, mold spores and animal dander. These four are common hay fever or seasonal allergies' allergens. The symptoms they illicit are the usual sneezing, watery eyes and runny noses that occur during seasonal allergies.

Other common causes of an allergic reaction that can trigger serious symptoms are insect bites or stings, food allergies and allergies due to medication. These kinds of allergies can render serious side effects that can be fatal to an individual. The allergic reaction triggered by one of these causes can lead to potential death or debilitation of the individual. Some asthmatic patients who suffer other kinds of allergies need to be monitored carefully.

Children with allergies need to be constantly monitored because they are not as aware as adults when it comes to their safety. Their smaller bodies are also prone to anaphylactic shock and other severe symptoms of allergies.
